The Director of Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the overall operation, management, and strategic direction of the hospital Pharmacy which includes system-wide pharmacies, closed door pharmacy and consultative PACE program oversight. The position is responsible for the overall success and growth of the pharmacy program across the health system and ensures all services and processes are standardized to meet the highest level of quality for our patients. The director is forward-looking and keeps abreast of changes in the healthcare industry to ensure the pharmacy program meets the current and future needs of our patients and the strategic, continued growth of the pharmacy program.

  • Provides strategic system leadership and direct oversight for health system pharmacies.
  • Works collaboratively with leadership to create a service line infrastructure comprised of high-quality clinical care supported by highly reliable operational services.
  • Cultivates and maintains professional relationships with primary customers of the clinical area(s) including, but not limited to: medical directors, physicians, patients, supply vendors and external entities to foster opportunities for revenue enhancement, cost efficiency, enhanced customer service and to positively impact clinical measures. Ensures effective and efficient delivery, communication, and administration of all related programs.
  • Oversees and adjusts all workflow, space and systems processes as needed to meet operational requirements and anticipates future needs for planning purposes.
  • Monitors, analyzes, and reports on established performance metrics on a regular basis.
  • Works closely with clinic operations leadership to ensure that all information systems are operational, and accurate and includes implementation of and transition to new systems and integration with existing systems.
  • Provides regular consultation for clients and staff regarding medication and assures that all other dispensing pharmacists provide regular consultation for clients.

  • Ensures all pharmacy staff are adequately trained and proficient in the essential functions of their roles.
  • Ensures compliance with all licensure and governing body requirements including, but not limited to: Board of Pharmacy, Office of Pharmacy Affairs (including 340B Drug Pricing Program), CA Health and Safety Code, CA Business and Professions Code.
  • Ensures compliance with all contractual requirements of payers including but not limited to: Medi-Cal, Medicare, AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), private insurance, and all federal, state and local government contracts.
  • Ensures compliance with purchasing agreement(s) and maintains close contact with vendor(s) for ordering, inventory and billing purposes.
  • Ensures that all licensed pharmacy staff meet all licensure requirements including continuing education and recertification.
  • Works with the Quality department to develop and implement regular monitoring of quality indicators which lead to high-quality results and exceed patient and participant expectations Ensures accountability across all pharmacy staff and programs, prioritization of safe practices and processes, and services that exemplify core values.
  • Works closely with the Chief Finance Officer/Vice President, Clinic Operations and other senior staff and outside consultants to develop and manage comprehensive business plan for the Pharmacy including analysis of potential business opportunities, anticipated margins, forecasts of future sales and performance metrics.
  • Works closely with the Chief Finance Officer and Executive Vice President, Clinic Operations and other Managers to maintain and develop all vendor and payer contracts.
  • Responsible for managing the operational budget of the Pharmacy in conjunction with other staff and manager.
  • Assures that all charges are accurately recorded and monitored.

Requirements for Director of Pharmacy – Hospital

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or related field
  • PharmD from an accredited college of pharmacy preferred Certifications/Licenses Preferred:
  • Current licensure to practice pharmacy in California preferred Experience Required (Minimum level of experience):
  • Minimum of five years in a hospital and/or clinical pharmacy setting
  • Minimum of five years in a managerial capacity
  • Knowledge of 340B drug pricing
  • Must have excellent English speaking and writing skills
  • Must be proficient in making group presentations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong organizational, detail, managerial and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment.
  • Background and knowledge of pharmaceutics and their drugs and interactions.
  • Experience with pharmacy management systems required; familiarity and working ability with practice management systems, database operations, spreadsheets, and other software systems is a preferred.
