The RN Director, Med Surg Telemetry is a key leadership position responsible for the strategic planning, operational execution, and clinical excellence of the hospital’s largest inpatient clinical areas. This role serves as a vital link between senior leadership and frontline staff, ensuring that high-quality, safe, and cost-effective patient care is delivered across all assigned units. The Director is the primary advocate for nursing practice and professional development within their service lines.
Standard of Care: Establish, implement, and monitor evidence-based clinical standards, protocols, and policies for the care of adult Med-Surg and Telemetry patients, including post-operative, complex medical, and cardiac monitoring cases.
Safety & Compliance: Ensure continuous adherence to regulatory requirements (TJC, CMS, State DOH) and uphold core quality measures, specifically aiming to reduce Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HACs) such as falls, pressure injuries, and Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI).
Telemetry Oversight: Provide specialized oversight for telemetry monitoring systems and protocols, ensuring staff competency in rhythm recognition, appropriate intervention, and response to critical changes in patient cardiac status.
Performance Metrics: Lead ongoing Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives, utilizing data to track, trend, and achieve performance targets related to Core Measures, patient experience (HCAHPS) scores, and infection control rates.
Budget Accountability: Develop, manage, and monitor the annual operational and capital budgets for assigned units. Responsible for variance analysis and implementing cost-control strategies without compromising patient safety or quality.
Resource Allocation: Manage nursing and non-nursing labor productivity using established staffing matrix models. Oversee daily staffing adjustments to meet acuity needs while adhering to full-time equivalent (FTE) targets.
Efficiency and Throughput: Collaborate with the Emergency Department, Perioperative Services, and Case Management to optimize patient flow, reduce length of stay (LOS), and improve bed turnover times for the Med-Surg and Telemetry population.
Staff Engagement: Create and sustain a positive, high-performing work environment that fosters retention and minimizes nurse turnover.
Recruitment & Retention: Actively participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of nursing and support staff. Implement effective retention strategies, mentorship programs, and succession planning.
Performance Management: Manage all aspects of employee relations, including counseling, disciplinary actions, annual performance reviews, and recognizing high performance.
Shared Governance: Support and champion the hospital’s Shared Governance model, empowering staff involvement in clinical decision-making and policy development.
