We’re looking for a detail-focused Estimator to join a tight-knit team at a family-run machine shop in Chicago. Specializing in custom, high-precision components for industries like food, aerospace, packaging and automotive, our company values craftsmanship, reliability, and people-first leadership. Responsibilities
- Review technical prints and CAD drawings to determine dimensions, materials, and machining processes
- Generate labor, material, and machine time estimates for CNC and manual machining jobs
- Prepare detailed cost quotes for customers and sales reps, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness
- Communicate directly with vendors to source material quotes and assess lead times
- Decide whether jobs should be completed in-house or outsourced and coordinate accordingly
- Input all estimates and order data into the ERP system and maintain project tracking
- Issue and monitor work orders to keep jobs aligned with production timelines
- Keep technical documentation and project files organized for quick reference and traceability
- Act as a resource for internal teams with updates on quoting status and job progress
Requirements
- 4+ years of hands-on experience in a machining or job shop environment
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
- Familiarity with CNC lathes, mills, and manual machining processes
- Strong math and computer skills (Excel, ERP software, quoting tools)
- Experience working with metal and composite materials
- AutoCAD experience preferred; CNC programming a plus
- High attention to detail and accuracy in cost breakdowns
- Clear, professional communication skills with internal teams and vendors
- Prior quoting or estimating experience in a manufacturing setting strongly preferred
