Job Title: Controls Engineer III
Location: Louisville, KY (Remote Considered for Highly Qualified Candidates)
Travel: Up to 50%
Job Summary:
The Controls Engineer III leads all phases of a controls project, from concept and research to on-site installation and after-sales support. This role requires expertise in PLC programming, electrical design, and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate has experience in baggage handling or conveyor/material handling systems and serves as a subject matter expert within the team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Level 3 candidates preferred; Level 2 candidates with a strong background will be considered.
- Experience in baggage handling or conveyor/material handling is highly desired.
- Based out of Louisville, KY office; remote work is considered for highly experienced BHS industry professionals who can start in-office for the first 1-2 months.
- Willingness to relocate to Louisville for in-office work when not traveling.
- Travel requirement up to 50%.
Technical Skills & Requirements:
- Working knowledge of Rockwell PLC and HMI products; additional PLC experience is a plus.
- Ability to collaborate with Electrical Design Engineers to verify system designs.
- Must be able to obtain airport security clearance.
- Authorized to work in the U.S. (Sponsorship considered for the right candidate).
Essential Functions:
- Expert understanding of AC/DC control systems.
- Use of computer software for design engineering and PLC programming.
- Troubleshooting systems and effectively communicating status.
- Designing and developing layouts for electrical circuits and control distribution.
- Creating and verifying electrical diagrams while mentoring junior engineers.
- Leading project teams as the controls lead engineer.
- Developing functional system test plans for field commissioning.
- Providing technical documentation, training, and process improvements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Proficiency in multiple PLC programming languages and control device networks.
- Ability to interpret and develop electrical designs and system specifications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Effective communication and organizational skills.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible hours based on project needs.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (EE, EET, or CECS preferred) or equivalent experience.
- 6+ years of relevant experience in the field.
- Experience with:
- PLC programming, debugging, and commissioning.
- Panel/hardware design.
- AutoCAD (AutoCAD E preferred).
- Microsoft Office Suite.
- Electrical codes such as UL508a, NEC, and NFPA.
Preferred Experience:
- Hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of VFDs, Servos, Sensors, and Vision Systems.
- Background in material handling or baggage handling industry.
