Civil Engineer

The Substation Civil Engineer will work within a multi-discipline team to develop efficient and reliable preliminary drawings and designs of site, foundation, and structural components for high-voltage substation facilities. This role requires adherence to industry codes, standards, and the Request for Quote (RFQ) scope of work, ensuring constructability of the design. The individual will also provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to less experienced engineers within the department.

The Substation Engineering Division is nationally recognized for its expertise in planning and designing new substations, high-voltage electrical substations, and switchyards. Our multidisciplinary approach enables us to deliver comprehensive design services, leveraging technical expertise to create solutions tailored to client needs.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.

• Professional Engineering (PE) License required.

• 3-7 years of experience in civil/structural engineering design.

• Experience in the utilities or energy industry is a plus.

• Experience with the analysis and design of concrete foundations (iPile, RISA), anchorage systems, and review of structural steel and connections preferred.

• Experience with site drainage design, grading, surface/sub-surface drainage plans, and cut-and-fill requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide civil and structural engineering services during the proposal, design, and construction of AIS and GIS projects while ensuring compliance with project contracts.

• Collaborate with project lead engineers to develop design criteria and document deliverable lists.

• Deliver engineering and design support in key civil and structural areas, including:

  • Substation/Switchyard general arrangement review

  • Estimating civil & structural quantities

  • Grading & drainage design

  • Foundation and calculation design

  • Anchor bolt planning and detailing

  • Steel structure calculations and design

  • Building calculations and design

  • Equipment specification

  • Material and construction specification

  • Signing and sealing design packages

  • Resolving civil and structural site issues during construction

• Provide construction and field engineering support during project execution.

• Travel to client sites and field locations as necessary.
