The certified athletic trainer is charged with managing the health care of participating athletes, including, but not limited to, first aid/emergency care, on-site injury evaluation, appropriate modalities, prevention, rehabilitation programs and medical referrals. Position Overview:

    1. Performs the following functions regarding athletic injuries: prevention, recognition, assessment, treatment (including first aid) and reconditioning of athletic injuries as set forth by the NATA Board of Certification.
    2. Covers assigned practices, sports games or matches and related events under the supervision of the team physician and/or program manager. Depending on the institution, this may include weekend and/or evening contests.
    3. Depending on the institution, travels with the team to away games, including overnight stays as required.
    4. Develops treatment programs, including indicated modalities, therapeutic exercises and strength and conditioning programs, in accordance with findings of evaluations and goals established by the injury assessment or by the treating physician.
    5. Prepares athletes for treatment and ensures comfort and safety of athletes.  Carries out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the team/program/event physician. 
    6. Applies treatment procedures and modalities in accordance with established indications and contraindications.
    7. Assesses athletes’ status in response to treatment and modifies programs as appropriate.  Refers athletes for appropriate diagnostic and follow-up procedures and subsequent injury tracking.
    8. Coordinates follow-up treatment/appointments with physician office manager and/or Rehab scheduling team and ensures immediate access to services.
    9. Informs athlete and families of important aspects of athletes’ present condition, including concussion, wound care, first aid and follow-up care.  Informs physician and program manager of any necessary documentation or observable signs that need investigation.
    10. Communicates with athletes, parents, athletic director(s), coaches and physicians regarding athletes’ playing status and ability to return to competition. All communication must be conducted within the bounds of confidentiality.
    11. Demonstrates proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment.
    12. Uses assigned athletic training equipment safely and efficiently.
    13. Maintains athletes’ medical records and relevant paperwork, including statistics and injury logs as established.
    14. Works confidently in crisis or emergency situation, demonstrating knowledge of safety practices.
    15. Organizes pre- and post-participation physicals.
    16. Participates in select community service/educational programs related to sports medicine.
    17. Assists is program development related to sports medicine.  Assists with on-boarding process for all new contracts.  Assists with creating and maintaining relevant statistics to ensure program growth and success.
    18. Demonstrates interpersonal skills required to work effectively with players, coaches and other team personnel
    19. Demonstrates knowledge of the principals of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the athletes’ status and interpret the appropriate information.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.
  • Current certification from the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers.
  • Experience: Preferred one to two years of athletic training experience in a sports environment.
  • CPR Certification: CPR certification is required within 90 days of the hire date.
