Not do your homework. Say you are the hiring manager for the job you covet with the company you always dreamed of working for. The hiring manager REALLY want to know how badly you want to work for her company. She asks a simple, yet important question. “Why do you want to work for Acme Plumbing Supplies?” You answer, “because I’ve heard Acme is a great place to work.” Sure! But what else? Do your homework. Tell her not only have you heard it’s a great place to work, but the company has experienced rapid yet steady growth over the last five years. That you understand Acme has an excellent track record of moving strong employees up through the organization. That Acme has a history of innovation in developing the most cutting edge products in plumbing. BUT, make sure you know this to be true. If not, your homework will provide you with examples that will make you shine.

A great place to start is by searching Acme Plumbing via LinkedIn. From there, go to Google search and of course, Acme Plumbing’s own website. In an hour, with a little web surfing, you’ll be ready. Be prepared for follow up questions. Once you’ve opened Pandora’s Box, be sure you are knowledgeable and can not only walk the walk, but talk the talk.
