The function of a Field Superintendent is to plan, assign resources to, and supervise all of the company’s ongoing jobs.  S/he oversees all field employees and equipment, monitoring and reporting progress on all jobs, setting goals and job schedules, developing strategies, addressing issues, and liaising with customers and vendors as necessary.

  • Working knowledge of Heavy Equipment usage, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Good communication and documentation skills.
  • Working knowledge of Surveying, EDM and GPS systems.
  • Proper job site attire, including safety boots and vest, gloves, coveralls, etc.

Reporting Relationship:

  • The Field Superintendent reports to the President.
  • The Dispatcher, the Foreman/Foremen, and the Mechanic report to the Field Superintendent.
  • Grade Checkers, Operators, and Laborers report to the Foremen.

Authorities:

  • Exercise the responsibilities and perform the duties of this position.  This includes full decision-making authority for all responsibilities and/or duties.
  • Set authority levels for direct reports (as long as authorities do not exceed your level).
  • Communicate with customer regarding job progress, issues, billing, etc.
  • Approve subordinate vacation schedules.
  • Communicate with job Superintendent and/or site engineers, public agencies.
  • Contact new and past suppliers to make RFP, RFQ for equipment, material, and/or personnel.
  • Authorize repairs of equipment up to $2,500.00

Responsibilities:

  • Compare project actual amounts with budgeted amounts using a forecast and variance report.
  • Conduct company operations within established budgets.  Develop strategies and take action when variance reports suggest that the company is not meeting budgetary targets.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the President
  • Report and correct unsafe working conditions.
  • Assist all direct subordinates in developing proper reporting to regulate their functional areas effectively.
  • Assist with interviewing and testing new employees as required. Cancel any equipment that is not needed.
  • Communicate requirements, schedule, directions, etc. to equipment supplier.
  • Notify employees scheduled for work, and give directions if needed.
  • Prepare rental agreement for equipment use and email or fax to suppliers.
  • Prepare B2W Track daily logs for each Project and enter into Track.
  • Receive equipment requests from Foremen and/or Field Superintendent.
  • Report/confirm to Field Superintendent and Foreman/Foremen regarding equipment that will be supplied.
  • Using Vendor Log, contact equipment suppliers for required equipment.
  • Document vendor rates, contacts, performance, and other information in Vendor Log based on reports from foreman and other personnel.
  • Assist Accounting Departments with issues relating to Job Costs and Dispatch
  • Attend and participate in weekly project meetings.
  • Audit internal company procedures, policies and expenditures to protect against wasteful, inefficient or fraudulent practices on an ongoing basis.
  • Choose and train a back up to carry out your duties in case of absence.
  • Maintain Field Operations Procedure manual.
  • Collect, review and approve procedures from direct subordinates on a yearly basis (minimum).  
  • Communicate with, and manage, workers assigned to project.
  • Complete initial 60 day and semi-annual performance reviews of all direct subordinates and update their job descriptions.
  • Assign work/sections to project workers and coordinate equipment
  • Complete daily report, documenting hours worked, project, work process and providing a brief explanation of job progress
  • Maintain high level of skill in all phases of labor, grade checking, and equipment operation.
  • Order equipment, labor, and material as required.
  • Management of EEE equipment fleet and monitoring of Applied Costs and expenses with reporting to President.
  • Field superintendent directs and coordinates all field plans in regard to equipment/manpower needed to completed project in a timely manner. 
  • Works alongside foreman to create look ahead. 
  • Controls the flow of project.
  • Superintendent needs to communicate with Project Manager to see if look ahead works with budget.
  • Superintendent needs to review dispatch at end of the day. 
  • Update and maintain current standard operating procedures for Job position.
